    10 min major...served by ME!?!

So I have a great story out there for everyone, this past season my school was playing Nichols College (ECAC NE D3) and well, we just happened to have the worst official in the history of hockey. I have never ever been able to blame a loss on a ref for a game until this specific incident. The first period is under way and we some how take a nice 2-0 lead at the end of the first with 1 short handed goal since we were in the box for 12mins of the 20 in the period. Period 2 comes into play and we take a 3-0 lead before the biggest joke of a call I have seen in my career was about to occur. So Nichols College, noticing all the calls the refs are giving them (at our home rink...a shocker I love how Johnson and Wales always leads the league by 200 or so PIMS because of refs) decides to start taking dives at every chance they get. One such incident happens infront of my net, so I decide to chirp the player a bit, without swearing at him because I already knew the ref was on a power trip, and the damn zebra throws up the hands to the hips for a miconduct penalty.

As I do not realize what his call is about I line up for the face off, in which to hear the head ref whailing away on his whistle and screaming at me to get into the box. The linesmen are just as shocked as I am and I don't know what to do. To my prior knowledge of hockey, it was players that served a goalies 10min. But according to this "REF" it was me, yes the goalie that had to sit in the box for 10mins. Our fans are irate, my coach is about to choke out the ref, and I am comtiplating 2 handing him in the face with my stick. SO I take the box, furious all 10mins as our cold goalie had to go in and give up 3 goals to allow nichols to tie the game.

I return to the ice, and we ended up ending the period 4-4. Our leading scorer Craig Houle who had I believe 47 points this season, is someone who is accoustomed to putting the puck in the net. When he scored the 4th goal of the game, he skated past the bench to do the usual high 5 and we then assigned a 10min major himself for excessive celebration. So now not only has our ref given myself a 10min major, but also our top scorer on our team and our league.

All in all at the end of the game, after OT we the game was tied at 4-4 ( i really hope NCAA changes the OT rules...they suck, lets go ShOOTOUT!)
Our team had 3 game misconducts and 4 10 min majors. If I could remember the officals name I would put it in here for all of you to fear. He is the perfect example of someone who never made it in hockey and decided to have a nice power trip with his whistle. If I ever see him in a dark ally way I will chop off all his damn fingers so he can never hold a whistle again!!

P.s. Sorry for the typo pals, just work up and its kind of hard to type while laying down...hope everyone enjoys or has some funny stories themselves to add!

Typos? Since you've brought up the subject let's discuss your atrocious grammar! You're a college student for God's sake! Someone else had to have written your college essay. WOW!

    From the NCAA rulebook:

Yep, we had this incident happen against SJSU last season. Starting goalie got put in the box for 10 minutes because he asked the ref what he was calling. We were up 3-2 at that point. I got put in cold turkey on the insuing PK (we had taken another penalty). We ended up scoring on the PK and went up 4-2. I played for the next 10-12 minutes of the second because of the PK's and inability to get a whistle - they finally scored on the second 5 on 3 they had (the ref hated us and was a total homer) to make it 4-3. We put the starting goalie back in for the remainder of the game as his 10 minute ended shortly after.

According to the scoresheet, I was accredited with stopping 14 of 15 shots. Now here's the kicker - because of the way the game worked out (us winning 6-3) with them getting that one goal (their 3rd) on me and us getting the one shorty (our 4th) while I was on the ice, I was the goalie-of-record for the win. All with about 14-15minutes of play time.

Now, you might be wondering - why put the starter back in if I was playing hot? That is beyond me. Coaches play favorites. Fact of life.

I reffed the final of a D10 game just a month and a half ago. Remember this is the finals of the playoffs and the rules have not changed since the start of September. First, I had a guy argue an icing call with me, he wanted me to call an icing shot from the red line when we use the defensive blueline for those. The guy was yelling at the top of his lungs at me then when I answered back with a "learn the rules before you argue with me", the guy because defensive and said he was asking.

Later in the game, same team, they get a "delay of game" call for shooting the puck over the glass and the player who shot the puck was going "are we playing in the NHL now? When did we play with this rule?" Then the captain started arguing that his teammate didn't do it intentionally. I mean which part of automatic penalty, do you not understand?

P.S. I hate NCAA rules, some of them are so damn childish...

I can't count the number of times guys try to plead for a "delay of game" penalty when the puck is shot over the glass in the defensive zone, even though USAH has never used that rule.

It's just easier to pick on you guys since there are more of us than there are of you. I can't speak for anyone else, but a ref that calls a solid game is worth his weight in any substance you care to mention. What I appreciate even more is the ref who isn't going to reverse his call, but can at least take the time now and again to explain what he did see. Now if you're abusing the ref, then good luck getting that kind of consideration.
If you truly want a look into the darkside, there is a board like this one for officials.

    A great read.

So poke fun all you'd like...I will be the one laughing at you for not having to bust my *** for four years and having a great job! HAHAHA!
I'm sure I'll be alright, and maybe learned a thing or 2 while working hard. I had a 3.9 after my freshmen year as well..I'm sure it'll get a little more challenging.

Ya know what makes me laugh? Ya know what makes me chuckle so hard I could shoot a piece of PEZ candy out of my nose and knock out a doberman pinscher?

When I'm reffing a D5 playoff game and the losing team's captain is screaming at me because his players are "getting taken down"... and he doesn't even know what a delayed offside call is or how to touch up ALL THE WAY OUT of the zone, not just into the blue paint. I also get a huge laugh from some of the other players who yell "he's checking me!" when they skate full speed out of control at another player, and run into them, and fall down. Finally, I really get a good snort out of every Tom Dick and Harry that screams "that's a high stick!!" ( delayed call ) or "hand pass" when it's in the defensive zone.

    Fookin' hockey players.

    Story Time

OK, so this isn't a story about a call on me personally, just another in a long line of odd ref experiences.

There was a ref working our game one night, a semi-competitive adult league in Raleigh. This is a guy that we're familiar with. He's got his oddities like arguing with players and basically carrying things farther than they really need to go, but at least half the time he's passable as long as you don't get on his bad side.

Midway through the second period, one of our players picks up the puck at their blue line and attempts to curl into the zone. As he curls near one of their players he loses an edge and goes down. The whistle blows. At first, I'm not thinking anything of this as it looked like it might be offsides, but the ref skates in to pick up the puck and tells points to our guy that just fell and says "two minutes, tripping". We're all a little in shock as our guy was the one who fell, so he gets up and kind of glides toward the ref with this inquisitive look on his face and his hands hanging at his side trying to ask what he did.

As he neared the ref, the ref takes both hands and punches our player right in the chest, knocking him to the ice. I'm completely in shock at this, and several of our players on the ice rush to keep our fallen player from getting back up and turning the ref into a red smear along the ice. The ref, meanwhile, is busy skating to the scorer's table announcing a game misconduct for our guy before turning around and yelling at him to leave the ice. Chaos ensues.

Fortunately for us, the rink manager is the one running the clock this game. As our player is leaving the ice escorted by the other ref and a player or two from our team, the manager pops up on the scorer's table to yell over the glass. He basically tossed the ref and we found out later that he banned him from ever working the rink again. We all had to show up though for a hearing with the local USAH reps as the ref had submitted a report that the player in question assaulted HIM. We even had to talk to the cops that evening after the game was finished too.

As an strange post script, we did hear that this ref was having a lot of personal issues at this time. He has reffed several of my games for a different team and even a few for that same team without incident at all. I guess he got whatever was messed up in his life under control, but it sure made for one crazy scene that night.
