Keeps33 Equipment Repair Service Review (56k BEWARE! - Many pics)

Keeps33 Equipment Repair Service Review

Allow me to start out by giving a huge thanks to Keeps33 helping me get my mods done. Contact was fairly quick and easy throughout. He was a great guy to work with, with frequent communication and updates throughout the entire process – complete with pictures and what he was working on.

So after some discussion I ended up sending him two pieces of equipment:

(1) My Smith 5000 36+2 pads that had settled a bit, because my ATK is only 17.5 and I was landing just below the center of the knee block. I loved this pad, but had a few issues that I thought was preventing it from being truly perfect for me.
The thigh rise was a bit tall for me, the knee landing was a teensy bit too high, and it was a mess in that area, and the knee landing and the whole landing surface on the calf area was buckling.

Also with the post seal there was another flap at the knee area to fix straps, but I don’t use that strap and moved it lower I found that this extra flap was a hassle, and it is not present on the newer Smith 6000’s and Warrior Rituals so I asked for it to be removed as well. Also I was too lazy to replace the sliding toe bridge.

Some before pictures of the pads:

So what we had done in the end was trimming the landing surface so it wouldn’t interfere with the knee landing. Trimming the thighrise down by 2 inches, and redesigning the knee landing completely. So with the knee area we also had it lowered by an inch or so, and a new knee block installed – a solid one piece block similar done up similar to how the new Vaughn V5 7800 knee blocks are done. I asked for the sliding surface side to be super hard, and for the side my knee to hit to be quite a bit softer.

Comparison of before /after:

Some pics:

Nice look at the new knee block and trimmed calf wing with binding placed no it.

Toe Bridge swapped for a new one.

Tab fused (removed)

Picture showing the top of the pad, doesn’t even look like it was touched!

Great Butterfly seal!

Nice touch he did with the center calf strap which I didn’t have on there, is that he added a Velcro loop to keep it attached to the calf wedge, to prevent that part of the pad from sagging. GENIUS IMO.

A peek at the back of the leg channel after now.

(2) Next up was my Simmons UL5 catcher. So what I had done to this piece was remove part of the graphic, and relace the boundaries of the glove as well as there was some fraying here and there. I had used this glove for about a year non-stop after deciding I liked it more than my old Epic 8800. It had been on ice on after 3-4x a week for the first 6 months and then 1-2x a week for the next 5-6 months. I had gotten a few stingers on the palm, so I requested that the palm was beefed up. Also the tee was fairly shallow so I asked him what tee’s he had around – to which he responded a Vaughn Vision triple-tee. On it went.

Note the turco strap he added. Probably added since he likely noticed I keep my glove extremely tight on the wrist in conjunction with my smaller hands too.

Still some great closure on this bad boy despite swapping tee’s. Not to mention that seal too. Damn.

Another modification you may have noticed is the backhand. It is from the parts of a Smith 5000 glove I had, and I liked how it was able to open up all the way so the glove could dry much quicker.
]

Final Word:
Overall , this will NOT be my final word as I’ve yet to use them on the ice. However everything thus far is great, he included extra little things such as cutting loose stitches and even cleaned my pads up for me! All white pads no graphic must’ve been great to clean. The work was great and it didn’t even look like it was done by some shoddy strangerdanger feller – it looked professional and for the most part as if it wasn’t touched at all (well my glove is frankenstiened – but still…) Keeps33 does some great work, and I would highly recommend him for some repair/modification work to be done, he’s done some other stuff here in his own thread too:

Super light, super stable in the butterfly.

First time strapping on pads since March, almost over my big injury spell.

Will have a nice write up sometime in late November - early December after a few skates. Shouldn't be any issues after all - I've already been in these pads for a season .

I'll be getting drunk on the 27th. As I said I can only make it on the 26th.
I banged up my knee again at stick and skate on Wednesday when I lost control of my edge after backchecking to cover a 3-1 so it wasn't so bad.

I did strap on the pads this previous Friday I can attest to this .. they slide great. I just have to get some straps adjusted, toe ties some slack ( wear my pads super tight so i have quite a bit of slack to get rotation ).

I played the game one legged (couldn't drop on my right knee) and I just slid like nothing though.

Catcher was great, pucks were just getting eaten up by it, Took a couple off the palm - didn't feel anything.

Have enough skates to do a nice review on these now...

I'll start with the glove.... there's only one flaw... the glove is a black hole, when i catch the puck i don't feel it... anything that hits the pocket gets SUCKED UP, the dampening is amazing, don't even feel the puck hitting it.

Protection is GREAT, closure is pretty snappy. Tried it next to a board members Mason return Sub Zero catch and feel is similar as well. Protection is great, taken some bombs off the palm and no stingers or anything. I am absolutely in love with this glove, and wish my future wife to be this comfortable. (oops, too far...)

Onto the pads:
They're soft, really soft. They were soft when I sent them to him. So no flaw, I LOVE SOFT PADS. They really comform to the legs, and react how I want them too.

That aside onto the mods I had done.
The knee block is a thing of beauty, with HD foams on the sliding surface, and soft foams on the knee landing it is great for butterfly stability and sliding. I did asked for it to be lowered by 1" - that was a mistake turns out that 1" lowering put me up at the top of the landing. Must iterate that it was my request.

The trimming of the calf landing was great as well, it does not bind with the knee wing anymore (which was fused into the knee block). Perfect.

Onto the thigh rise shortening. Again it looks great, pad looks like it was never cut down, and the shortening is great. But that said this was a mistake on my part as well, the large thighrise never really hindered me, I justed wanted it shorter for the sake of getting it shorter. At the time it seemed like a good move since i was a very mobile scrambly goalie. Which I still am to a degree, but I suffered a shattered patella and ruptured quadriceps tendon which forced my game to be a bit more position.
I have horrible hips and I have no butterfly so to speak:

Essentially no flare, and that thighrise closed it really well. Doing some analyzation and a half hour coaching session, we thought that I really would have benefited from an extra bit of thighrise for puck stoppage and protecting my knees as well. Again this is my mistake.

Keeps33 worksmanship is TOP notch. If you need work done on your pads, do NOT hesitate to to ask him. All the work done is amazing. Just unfortunately for myself I made some questionable decisions, in regards to cutting down the thighrise and lowering the knee block which changed the fit a bit so that it's not ideal for me anymore, but this is to blame on injury too which we can never predict.

That said I have installed a bootriser on the pads and they fit perfect now, and slide great. Only wish i looked back and didn't cut down the pads - again my bad judgement.

Keeps' work is great, would highly reccomend it. Hell next pair of pads I get, I may have them shipped directly to him and have him put on this magical knee block. As for gloves... he did such an amazing job on this frankenstein, I don't see myself parting from it - I clean it with the keeps33 method, and after 2 seasons it feels almost brand new inside still... amazing!

Just an update, after I whine and complain about them.... I go out and have a few amazing skates and bring my horrible GAA down (two 3-3 ties hah! still 0-5-2 on the season...)... This will be on-going. I still feel like I should have kept the thighrise... knee block makes sliding a dream though.
